Since 2012, Hope Against Cancer’s Clinical Trials Facility based at Leicester Royal Infirmary has been offering patients access to some of the latest medicines and therapies. We need to double the size of this Facility so that we can offer even more world-class clinical trials of potential new cancer drugs and treatments to local people. We spoke with Hope Against Cancer who said to us :
“Hope is raising £1.5 million to make the vision of a new and extended cancer clinical trials facility become a reality. We are nearly there and only have £100K more to raise. We are asking our supporters and members of the public to get behind the appeal and donate whatever amount you can, large or small.
The Covid 19 pandemic is having a significant impact on research capability within the Hope Clinical Trials Facility, indeed, in order to facilitate research into treatment for the Covid 19 infection, some of the research staff have been effectively seconded to work on Covid 19 studies, The techniques and approaches used by cancer researchers – epidemiology, molecular biology, virology and immunology – are the same disciplines that are being used to track, understand and beat this virus. This means that our researchers can provide expertise, knowledge, kit and machinery to help beat COVID-19.
Despite this extremely challenging scenario, Hope Against Cancer is determined to play its part in continuing to support life-saving cancer research within our NHS local hospitals and continue to save the lives of cancer patients now and well into the future.
